A Perfect Day Trip to Nicaragua
If you’re visiting Costa Rica and looking for an adventure-packed day trip, Nicaragua is just a short journey away and offers stunning landscapes, rich culture and unforgettable experiences. In just one day, you can explore a breathtaking volcanic outlook, visit a vibrant artisan market, witness an active lava-filled volcano, wander through a colonial city and cruise around beautiful islets on Lake Nicaragua. I used a tour company to make sure that I could visit as many places as possible in one day. It began with a drive to the border where I walked across the border to enter Nicaragua. I had to get through customs and then search for my tour guide.
We started the day early and headed to Catarina Volcano Outlook, a spectacular viewpoint offering panoramic views of Laguna de Apoyo, a crystal-clear crater lake surrounded by lush greenery. The cool breeze and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect spot to soak in the beauty of Nicaragua before the day’s adventures unfolded. You’ll find small vendors selling handicrafts, snacks and can grab a fresh coconut water to start your journey off right. It can get really hot here so hydration is super important!
Next, we made our way to the Masaya Artisan Market in the charming town of Masaya. This lively marketplace is filled with handmade souvenirs, traditional pottery, colorful hammocks, wood carvings and locally crafted jewelry. If you’re a fan of authentic keepsakes, this is the perfect place to shop. Be sure to sample some quesillo (a local cheese-filled tortilla) or a refreshing cacao drink while you explore.
One of Nicaragua’s most thrilling sights is the Masaya Volcano, an active volcano where you can actually see molten lava bubbling inside the crater! Known as the “Mouth of Hell,” Masaya is one of the few places in the world where you can drive right up to the crater’s edge. The sulfur-scented air serves as a reminder of nature’s raw power. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some parakeets that make their home in the smoky cliffs of the volcano.
After an exhilarating volcano visit, our next stop was Granada, one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful colonial cities. Stroll through its cobblestone streets lined with colorful Spanish-style buildings, historic churches and charming courtyards. Visit Parque Central, where street vendors sell local treats and horse-drawn carriages offer scenic rides through the city. I thoroughly enjoyed the carriage ride. Be sure to stop by the La Merced Church. We didn’t have time on the tour but I’d recommend a climb to the bell tower for a stunning panoramic view of Granada and the distant volcanoes.
We wrapped up the day with a relaxing boat tour around the Islets of Lake Nicaragua, a cluster of more than 360 small islands formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. As you glide through the lake, you’ll pass lush, palm-covered islets, luxurious private homes and even a small island inhabited by playful monkeys. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the sunset reflecting over the water before heading back.
The day trip to Nicaragua was an exciting mix of nature, culture and history. From breathtaking views at Catarina, shopping in Masaya, and the spectacle of Masaya Volcano to the colonial beauty of Granada and a peaceful lake cruise, this journey is a perfect snapshot of Nicaragua’s rich offerings.
If you have extra time, consider extending your stay—but if one day is all you have, this itinerary ensures you experience some of the best highlights Nicaragua has to offer!
