A Quirky Surprise in Suchitoto
Tucked away in the charming colonial town of Suchitoto, El Salvador, is a little gem I didn’t expect to stumble upon. I found a plate museum. Yes, plates. And yes, it was absolutely worth a visit.
Set in a quiet corner of town, this museum showcases an eclectic and fascinating collection of decorative plates from all over the world. Some are hand-painted, others commemorate events, places or people and many have their own little stories behind them. The sheer variety made me smile: floral patterns, royal portraits, vintage designs and even some with a bit of humor. And the owner took me on a tour and shared information about the different treasures in her museum.
Wandering the small but thoughtful space felt like flipping through a very visual, very colorful travel journal. Every wall was covered in plates, each one hanging proudly like a piece of art. And somehow, in this peaceful town steeped in history, the whole thing just worked. It was quirky, unexpected and charming.
There’s something kind of beautiful about a museum dedicated to everyday items. It’s a reminder that even the most ordinary things can hold meaning, beauty and history.
If you’re ever in Suchitoto, take a little detour to the Museo de los Platos. It’s charming, offbeat and a perfect reflection of the town itself.
