Into the Wild: Night Hikes in Monteverde
When I signed up for a night hike in Monteverde, I figured it would be interesting. Maybe we’d spot a frog or two, hear the sounds of the forest after dark. I wasn’t expecting sloths, vipers, tarantulas, and glowing scorpions… or to find myself face-flat on my back on the forest floor at one point. But I’m so glad I said yes to the experience.
There’s something surreal about stepping into the Costa Rican rainforest at night. The air feels different—cooler and heavier somehow. You’re surrounded by sounds from the low hum of insects, the call of night birds and leaves rustling from creatures you can’t quite see. With just a small flashlight and a guide leading the way, you become part of the forest, not just a visitor.
And what we saw? Honestly, it blew me away.
Within minutes, we spotted a sloth curled up in a tree, moving with that slow-motion grace they’re known for. Then came the glow-in-the-dark scorpions, lighting up like little ghosts under UV light. A Brazilian wandering spider—highly venomous—was just chilling under a leaf like it owned the place (which, to be fair, it kind of does). The guides chuckled when someone asked how long you’d have if this critter bit you. Their response, “We would have you call your loved ones.” Tarantulas, green vipers, and more bugs than I could name. The forest was absolutely alive and yet I didn’t feel afraid.
At one point, I lost my footing and took a tumble. In broad daylight, it probably would’ve been no big deal, but in the pitch-black rainforest, with unknown creatures just inches away, it was a bit of a jolt. I was fine—thankfully—but it was a sharp reminder that out there, you don’t want to grab onto anything to catch yourself. What looks like a branch might be a snake. What feels like bark might sting. Balance was everything.
Even with the fall, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. It was exhilarating, humbling and absolutely beautiful. There’s a certain kind of awe that only comes from seeing the world in a new way and wandering a Costa Rican rainforest at night definitely qualifies.
If you ever find yourself in Monteverde, I highly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and into the darkness. Just be sure to watch your step and maybe skip the handrails.
